post holiday clean up can be a mess

Happy New Year! It’s 2018, can you believe it!? We’ve survived the holidays, our friends and families have come and gone, our hearts are full, and we got everything we’ve always wanted! But for party hosts, it also means a lot of messiness to clean up after the guests have gone! Start your home on the right foot for the new year with these 5 cleaning tips to make your post holiday clean up a little easier.

1: Get rid of unwanted gifts

It’s the thought that counts, but holding on to unwanted gifts for next years white elephant gift exchange will only add to the clutter in your post-holiday cleanup.  Return the gifts that didn’t work out, or donate them to a charity of your choice.  This will make cleaning up after the holidays much easier without the extra clutter.

2: Check your carpet and furniture for stains

The longer stains set, the harder they will be to remove.  If you spot any, mix warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, use a spray bottle to lightly apply to the affected area.  Blot with a paper towel and repeat until the stain is removed.  Lastly, spray with clear water and blot again. Let it air dry.

3: Cleaning the guest bedroom

Wash or replace the bed sheets.  To add an extra dose of freshness, wash the sheets with a capful of white vinegar and warm water. While sheets are in the dryer, use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to clean the mattress, paying special attention to the seams. Lastly, take a moment to fluff the pillows to make your next guest feel right at home.

4: Take down the lights

When you do, you’ll save yourself time next year if you put them away using one simple trick: wrap strings of lights around a piece of cardboard or a wooden dowel to keep them organized and easy to unravel next year. If you want to go the extra mile, pick up a few of these All Purpose Cord Wind-ups, great for both your Christmas lights and extension cords. Taking down your Christmas lights on Valentine’s Day? Not this year!!

5: Christmas tree removal

Bastrop has a few options when it comes time to haul off this year’s Christmas tree. Follow the City of Bastrop‘s facebook page for their FREE annual Christmas tree recycling drop off location. Free mulch is also available from the recycled trees. This is a great alternative to sending your tree to the landfill. If you can’t haul your tree into the drop off location, call your trash pick up service to coordinate getting your tree curbside. It’s easier to clean up after your party if you don’t have to worry about pine needles spreading through the house.

With these 5 post-holiday cleaning tips, you’ll be set for the new year! Of course, you may have better things to do than cleaning the house. So, once all the nutcrackers are safely put away and pine needles litter the carpet, schedule your cleaning with Maid In Bastrop.
